I did some volunteer work during the winter season for the Old Strathcona Youth Society and designed the poster for their annual winter wine festival. This year???s theme was ???party like it was the 90s??? which meant plenty of 90???s imagery and memorabilia.
From that alone, I assumed it would be an easy task. Then I realized I don???t depict much 90???s imagery or themes in my work so I had to research what that even looks like. You would think being born during that time I would have a wealth of knowledge, but I was greatly mistaken. During the research, I was met with waves of nostalgia, it never occurred to me how often those geometric patterns were used back in the day. I saw them on clothing and they were all over the media from sitcoms to cartoons. They were quite prominent.
So from all that I knew that these patterns had to be on the poster somehow, but I couldn???t forget about the memorabilia quite yet. It was requested that they appear on the poster. However, as I began to search up memorabilia the list seemed to be endless from all the toys, games, gadgets and pop culture. There was no way I could fit all this imagery without it coming off as overwhelming and intense. I mean, I still had to include the type and information for the event. I needed visual breaks in there somehow. In the end, I narrowed down the imagery to cassette tapes, something I believe it would be a classic icon.
For the poster, I made a pattern of geometric shapes and a repeating pattern of cassette tapes and used dividers to better showcase the patterns on their own as well as give enough space for tag lines and information to stand alone and be legible. I thought about overlaying imagery but no matter how I moved things around the overall feel was clutter and there was a lot to look at. So having those lines to divide the content was a perfect solution to showcase the details.
Overall it???s a fun poster, it captures the 90???s feel as well as matches the mood of a winter wine festival. All in all, a fun project!
