If someone asked me, ???Do you like surprises????
I would automatically say, ???Yes!???
For the most part, they bring joy and there is something fun about the unexpected, it changes things up a bit and it keeps things interesting. Though these types of surprises usually refer to parties, gifts, an event, and anything associated with a good time. In that case, of course, I would like surprises. Though, as you get older you become quickly associated with less desirable surprises, specifically the ones that interrupt the workflow. For most things in life especially those I have no control over I take on a ???take it as you go??? type of behaviour. Though when I have taken the time to carefully plan and mentally prepared myself for a particular flow of occurrences under a distinct time frame only to have it interrupted, I can???t help but get annoyed. Then again, most people would. It takes a while to get things in an order that satisfies both time constraints and productivity. So having to have all that planning go down the drain due to something happening unexpectedly sucks, especially if I have to accommodate for an outside party???s lack of competence.
All in all, it’s safe to say that I like order. I like it when the production flow makes sense, when things and people work like they???re supposed to, and when there is a clear direction of operation. When things happen unexpectedly everything becomes harder to control and potentially the task is lost to chaos. Despite all that, all that meticulous planning to have order isn???t a trait of mine that I???m particularly fond of, but I can???t deny what I instinctively want. Ideally, I want to be confident in handling all sorts of stress and surprises. No matter the scenario I want to be confident that I???ll get it done regardless. Because ultimately, I don???t want to view surprises as a notion that the world is against me, instead I want to be able to plan out my life, but also enjoy the detours life may throw at me.
For the illustration, I created a workspace similar to my own. My planner is always with me no matter where I go along with any important documents and notes I may need. Everything is neatly arranged together to emphasize the order. To act as the ???surprise??? I added ink splatters obstructing the view of the documents underneath. Though, instead of just seeing a mess, images emerge from the ink to symbolize the act of turning things around for the good despite the circumstances given to us. Life may have through me a curveball, but it doesn???t mean I still won???t hit my mark.
It was a fun illustration to do, though it did upset me a little bit to have to draw over the documents and planner illustration underneath, they turned out so cute!
That???s all for now, until next time!
