This is a commission I did back a little while ago for a friend for a wedding gift. The guidelines were that the couple had to be in it, that it was fantasy-themed, and that it captured the idea of being a team more specifically, ??? hand-in-hand we go together???. You have no idea how onboard I was with this project after hearing that. I don???t get to do fantasy too often but when I heard I could flex my fantasy skills I did not hold back.??
There were many routes we could have gone with this idea. Concept ideas ranged from the couple fighting with their backs pressed together, a victory scene after the battle, and a more tranquil scene of sitting by a campfire. We ended up going down the more tranquil route where the couple is resting mid-journey together in a forest.
For the most part, sketching out the couple in a cartoon-like nature and coming up with fantasy/DnD clothing was no issue to me at all since I???ve done it before in my previous sketches. But once it came to drawing the forest background I suddenly remembered the true up-hill climb was in the background. From conceptualizing to drawing out the draft I would use to follow in Clip Studio felt like it took forever. I knew I didn???t want to do a single plane because it would feel a little flat. I wanted something to happen on the foreground, mid-ground, and background. I wanted that full range of depth since it would make for a more interesting final piece. Though it did take significantly longer I am a lot more pleased with this result compared to my earlier sketches on the single level. In terms of the colour scheme, I based it off of the couple???s favourite colours purple and green, which was quite convenient since the background is a forest.
Overall it was a fun project that allowed me to have fun creatively. It also inspired me to do some more background studies, because that would be a great skill to get faster at!??
